Here are some of the highlights that Aqueous coating brings to your product packaging:
Environmentally friendly: Paper is easily recyclable and the coating process is simple and almost residue-free. No harsh chemicals are required after cleaning, which is an environmentally friendly disposal method.
Adaptable: The coating is flexible and easy to modify, suitable for a variety of printing inks, and can be easily written or printed to meet various packaging needs.
Cost-effective: It is often completed simultaneously with the printing process, which can effectively reduce additional processing costs.
Strong stability: It can prevent ink from fading, maintain metallic luster for a long time, and avoid yellowing due to the passage of time.
Water-based coatings cover a variety of different styles and uses. Common types include:
Glossy: Suitable for packaging that needs visual softness without sacrificing protection. If you are looking for a strong gloss, you can also choose UV or varnish.
Matte: This type reduces surface reflections and can better show the purity and depth of color.
Satin: Between glossy and matte, it is not too dazzling, but also resistant to fingerprints and light scratches.
Dry Erase: An economical lamination alternative with a relatively high gloss effect.
Writing-friendly: Ideal when writing clearly with a pen, pencil or laser pointer.
Velvet-touch: Gives a soft touch to packaging, which is significantly different from glossy coatings.
How Water-Based Coatings are Applied
A layer of water-based coating is applied to the paper before printing, and then dried by hot air. To maintain quality, problems such as warping, wrinkling or curling of the paper need to be prevented, while ensuring that the coating is evenly distributed.
What is the difference between water-based and UV coatings?
In addition to water-based types, UV coatings are also a common option. The core difference between the two is the drying principle. Water-based coatings cure by evaporation or absorption into the paper to form a protective film. UV coatings, on the other hand, cure immediately to a solid surface layer when exposed to ultraviolet light.
While both are effective, we generally recommend water-based coatings because they are low-cost, eco-friendly, and can effectively show the visual effects of CMYK or spot color patterns.
When is it appropriate to use water-based coatings?
Although water-based coatings are versatile, there are also situations where they are not suitable. For example, if customers need to write on the packaging, some coating types (non-writing types) may prevent the writing from sticking. If the product is handled a lot during transportation or assembly, water-based coatings can effectively protect against stains, scratches and abrasions, especially in retail packaging that needs to be processed multiple times.
