When meat, seafood and prepared-food companies move from conventional plastic trays to paper-based packaging, the challenge is not simply changing the material. They must also confirm gas retention, sealing stability, equipment compatibility, load per tray and end-of-life handling.

MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) replaces the air inside the package with a controlled protective gas mixture to help slow oxidation and microbial growth. In addition to paperboard support and printing capability, a paper-based MAP tray must provide the barrier and heat-sealing performance required for the specific project.

whether the product is a food packaging tray compatible with lidding film;

whether it has the barrier structure required by the target product;

Can Existing Sealing Equipment Use a Paper-Based Tray?

This is one of the most important points to confirm before purchasing a paper-based MAP tray. Before sampling, provide the supplier with:

the brand and model of the sealing equipment;

tray length, width, depth and load per tray;

tooling location method and changeover conditions;

heat-seal layer and dimensions of the matching lidding film;

heat-sealing temperature, pressure, cycle time and continuous-production requirements.

The sample trial should cover loading, sealing, stacking, transport and chilled-storage observation. If a peelable structure is selected, separately test the peel-and-separation performance after use. Trial records should retain seal integrity, tray deformation, leakage, positioning stability and appearance changes so that the structure and process parameters can be optimized later.

 

What Information Should You Provide When Requesting a Quote from a MAP Tray Supplier?

To reduce unnecessary back-and-forth communication, include the following information in the purchasing enquiry:

food type and product photographs;

load per tray and target dimensions;

brand, model and tooling information for the existing equipment;

lidding-film specifications or material requirements;

preference for a rectangular or octagonal structure;

preference for an integrated coated or peelable film-laminated structure;

estimated monthly volume, printing requirements and sample needs.

The more complete the information, the easier it is for the supplier to propose a testable map container or map tray sample configuration instead of providing a generic quotation that cannot be trialled directly.
